This presentation will review opioid pharmacology, the neurobiology of pain and an approach to management. There will be a review of the CDC guidelines for appropriate use of opioids following a short presentation of the the epidemiology of the current opioid overdose literature. This will be followed by a review of screening options for identify those individuals at greatest risk of developing an opioid use disorder. The program will conclude with a review of the current treatment options for managing opioid use disorders.

At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

• Understand opioid safe prescribing and alternatives to pain management with chronic long-term opioid therapy (LTOT).
• Improved knowledge of how to assess risk and address harms of opioid use.
• Know the options for treating the opioid dependent patient in pain.

Stephen Wyatt, DO, FAOAAM Steven Wyatt is a Board Certified Psychiatrist with added subspecialty certification in Addiction Psychiatry. He Completed a NIDA clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. He is a CHS professor of psychiatry and an adjunct clinical faculty member of the University of North Carolina. He is the current chairman of the NC psychiatric Association Addiction Psychiatry Committee and the Vice Chair of the Coalition of Physician Education and Substance Use Disorders a national organization focused on addiction medicine medical school education. He participated in the writing of the ASAM Clinical Guidelines for Office Based Opioid Treatment. He is a clinical expert for both that UNC ECHO for Rural Primary Care MAT in North Carolina and the SAMHSA funded Provider Clinical Support System, PCSS; MAT and MIP projects.
