The deadline to fulfill this requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission (regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration) on or after June 27, 2023.

Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 requires that beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners applying for a new or renewed Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration will need to attest to having completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders, as well as the safe pharmacological management of dental pain.

Any of the OUD and SUD courses listed in our educational learning system on these topics will satisfy the DEA training requirements.

Providers certified in addition medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Osteopathic Association, American Board of Medical Specialties, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine are exempt from having to complete this required training for new renewal of their DEA licenses, as well as graduation within five years and status in good standing from medical, advanced practice nursing, or physician assistant school in the United States that included successful completion of an opioid or other substance use disorder curriculum of at least eight hours.
