This lecture will describe how the trajectory of substance use and substance use disorders intersects with pregnancy and postpartum period including increased risk of morbidity and mortality.

Some evidence-informed treatments for methamphetamine use disorders among pregnant and postpartum people will be discussed.

Speaker:
Marcela Smid MD, MA, MS

Marcela Smid MD, MA, MS is a board certified Maternal Fetal Medicine and Addiction Medicine physician at the University of Utah. She is the director of perinatal addiction services and the medical director of the Substance Use & Pregnancy - Recovery, Addiction, Dependence (SUPeRAD) specialty prenatal clinic, a multi-disciplinary clinic for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder. She recently took over as Chair of the Utah Maternal Mortality Committee. Her research focus is on perinatal addiction, interventions for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders, maternal mortality and maternal mental health.
