Description
This session will review the critical importance of physician well-being, highlighting the prevalence and root causes of physician burnout, the evolution of FSMB policy on well-being, and the latest reforms in licensure to reduce stigma and support help-seeking behavior. Participants will gain insights into the structure and function of Physician Health Programs (PHPs), evidence-based policies on Physician Impairment, and national advocacy efforts, including collaborations with organizations like the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation and FSPHP, to promote systemic change and improve outcomes for both physicians and patients.

  • Differentiate between illness and impairment, and summarize appropriate, confidential interventions.

Humayun “Hank” Chaudhry, DO, MACP, FRCP President and CEO, Federation of State Medical Boards

Dr. Humayun “Hank” Chaudhry is the President and CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), which operates the Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) and co-owns the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) with the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Chaudhry is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. In 2022 and again in 2023, Modern Healthcare recognized him as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.

Dr. Chaudhry was raised in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from New York University, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at NYU Langone Long Island Hospital, where he was also Chief Resident. Recipient of a number of honorary degrees,

Dr. Chaudhry is Past President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists, a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London and Edinburgh). Dr. Chaudhry was in the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1999 to 2013, where he rose to the rank of Major and served as a flight surgeon. He is the author or co-author of more than 80 articles in the medical literature and co-author of two books. He is a member of the FSMB Foundation’s Board of Directors and Past Chair of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA), which represents 49 nations.
Christopher Bundy MD, MPH

Dr. Bundy is Executive Medical Director of the Washington Physicians Health Program (WPHP) and Chief Medical Officer of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs. Board-certified in adult and geriatric psychiatry as well as addiction medicine, he holds faculty appointments as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor at the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Drawing on his extensive experience as a healthcare leader, medical educator, and physician in recovery, Dr. Bundy is dedicated to advancing education, advocacy, and support for physician health and well-being. His contributions have been recognized with the President’s Unsung Hero Award from the Washington State Medical Association and the Presidential Recognition Award from the Federation of State Physician Health Programs.
Katie Templeton JD

As the daughter of a hard-working physician, Katie Templeton, JD was inspired by her father to “do no harm” at a very early age and, later, to focus on medicine as the cornerstone of her professional legal career. Ms. Templeton is a dynamic, skilled attorney with over 18 years’ experience in all phases of healthcare law, litigation and claims management, focusing on medical outcomes, patient safety and best practices. Ms. Templeton has served as a Public Member on the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners for over ten years and as President of the Board from 2020-2022 and currently serves as Vice President. During her Board tenure, she served as a member of the Oklahoma Opioid Task Force and personally authored the Best Practice guidelines for physicians in the state regarding opioid prescribing and legislative compliance, and Best Practice guidelines regarding legislation implemented following the Dobbs decision. In May 2020, Ms. Templeton was elected as a Public Member to the FSMB Board of Directors and in 2024 as Chair. Ms. Templeton’s knowledge and commitment to the FSMB, the Oklahoma Osteopathic Board and her law career has allowed her to maximize her efforts in promoting state-based medical regulation and accessibility to quality medical care by all, and to help ensure public protection.
Mark Staz MA

Mark L. Staz Chief Learning Officer, Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) Mr. Staz is Chief Learning Officer at the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). In this role, he is responsible for implementation of FSMB’s educational strategy and oversight of educational offerings, including webinars, online modules, symposia, and the FSMB Annual Meeting. Mr. Staz is also responsible for developing organizational policy related to medical regulation and professionalism, and supports FSMB’s international collaborations with medical regulators outside of the U.S., including its involvement in the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA). Mr. Staz has worked in medical regulation in Canada as a policy analyst for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and has been involved in several policy and research initiatives addressing human resources for health, social determinants of health, and physician performance enhancement. He received his master’s degree in philosophy at York University and is writing his doctoral dissertation on conflicting rights in health policy.
