ORN Summer 2026 - Hospital Addiction Consult Services for Patients with Opioid Use Disorder: Pragmatic Trial of the ‘Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH)’ Program
Description:

This presentation on the implementation and effectiveness of hospital addiction consult services focuses on the CATCH cluster-randomized trial which was conducted in 6 New York City public hospitals. The study’s Principal Investigator will give an overview of the significance of addiction consult services and the origins of the study, and then present quantitative and qualitative findings from the study. Discussion will include reflections on the effectiveness of these services for improving the reach of medications for opioid use disorder in the hospital and post-discharge, while also identifying areas for future programmatic innovations and research.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • Describe basic concepts of hospitalization as a touchpoint for engaging patients in opioid use disorder treatment.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of hospital addiction consult services for increasing initiation of medications for OUD and engagement in ongoing treatment.
  • Determine the barriers and facilitators of addiction consult service implementation from staff and patient perspectives, and consider strategies to address them.
