ORN Summer 2025 - Suicide and Overdose Risk in Opioid Use Disorder
Description:

This lecture will discuss how suicide risk is elevated in individuals with opioid use disorder. It will discuss reasons suicide risk may be elevated in opioid use disorder; research investigating the rate of and characteristics associated with suicide risk in opioid use disorder; how intentional opioid overdose interacts with suicide risk; and ongoing research and clinical work into these topics.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • Evaluate the impact of suicide risk in individuals with opioid use disorder
  • Explain characteristics associated with suicide risk in individuals with opioid use disorder
  • Describe how intentional opioid overdose intersects with suicide risk

Speaker:
Max Spaderna, MD

Dr. Spaderna is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Addiction Research and Treatment at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is board certified in Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. From 2015 to 2017, he was Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, from 2015 to 2017. From 2014 to 2017, he worked as a psychiatrist at the Mental Health Cooperative, a community mental health clinic in Nashville, Tennessee, where he focused on treating patients with severe and persistent illness struggling with unstable housing. Since joining the University of Maryland faculty, he has worked in different clinical settings within the division of Community Psychiatry and the Psychiatric Emergency Department, where he assessed and treated many patients for substance use disorders and suicide risk. In the Division of Addiction Research and Treatment, he is a psychiatrist in the Health and Recovery Practice (HARP), a clinic formed from a partnership with the University of Maryland's Institute of Human Virology, Faculty Physicians, and Department of Psychiatry that collocates substance use, physical health, mental health, and infectious disease care for patients with substance use disorder. He provides opioid use disorder treatment by telemedicine to incarcerated patients at the detention center in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. In addition, he provides consultation and psychiatric treatment for a cohort of patients with substance use disorders treated and followed by principal investigators at the Institute of Human Virology. As a researcher in opioid use disorder, Dr. Spaderna's interests include suicide risk, intentional opioid overdose, psychiatric treatment, and social determinants of health.
