ORN Summer 2025 - Changes in recovery capital among patients receiving buprenorphine treatment for OUD in a Telehealth Setting
Description:

Medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (MOUD) such as buprenorphine are the most effective treatment available for OUD. Beyond drug testing results and retention in care, systematically measured clinical outcomes to assess clinical success of treatment have proven elusive. There is growing interest in integrating systematic monitoring of patient-reported outcomes and measurement-based care as strategies to improve patients' success in treatment. "Recovery capital" is a theoretical construct that represents personal, social, environmental, and cultural resources that can help individuals initiate and sustain recovery from a substance use disorder (SUD). The objective of the present study was to characterize changes in recovery capital assessed via the Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital (BARC-10) from baseline as well as the association between baseline scores and retention among patients receiving treatment with buprenorphine in a telehealth setting.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • Outline evidence based treatment for opioid use disorder
  • Explain how telehealth modalities compare to in-person care for the treatment of opioid use disorder
  • Describe basic concepts of outcomes reporting and measurement for substance use disorder treatment
  • Explain differences between various scales used to measure patient-reported outcomes for SUD care

Arthur Robin Williams, MD MBE

Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University with a decade of experience analyzing observational data including EHR, insurance claims, and epidemiological reports. He has been funded by NIDA (K23 2017, R21 2018, CTN, 2021, R01 2022, R01 2023) for work which addresses the addiction treatment gap and systems-based practice to improve quality of care for the treatment of opioid use disorder through the development of an OUD Cascade of Care public health framework. He is also currently funded by the CDC, NIDA CTN and SAMHSA to respond to the opioid crisis regarding local surveillance and linkage to care efforts, post-COVID methadone regulatory changes and outcomes, and clinical decision support tool development to assist state agency and health system efforts to respond to the opioid crisis through data management. For this work, he was awarded the American Psychiatry Association (APA) Health Services Researcher of the Year, Early Career Scholar (2019) and appointed to the APA Committee on Quality and Performance Measurement (2021).
