ORN Fall 2026 - A Randomized Trial of Extended-release Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment During Pregnancy and for 12-months Postpartum: Results from National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network Study 0080
Description:

This talk will review the key design and primary and secondary outcomes from NIDA Clinical Trials Network Study 0080. This is a landmark study that randomized 140 pregnant adults with moderate-severe opioid use disorder across multiple collaborative care addiction and OB/GYN treatment programs. Participants were randomized to either extended-release buprenorphine (weekly while pregnant, monthly optional post-partum if not breastfeeding) or sublingual buprenorphine. Study treatment was provided through delivery and for 12 months post-partum. Comprehensive effectiveness and safety outcomes for the participating mothers and babies will be shared and discussed.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • List three clinically significant findings of sublingual buprenorphine and weekly extended-release buprenorphine during pregnancy and the post-partum period.
  • Explain why rates of non-medical opioid use may have decreased after delivery.
  • Explain two strengths and two limitations of the study design.
