Description:
This presentation describes new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to improving the care of patients with methamphetamine use disorder. Specific strategies for engaging patients and improving systems of care are described along with original data from BEAT Meth, a multimodal CDC-funded study. A peer recovery specialist discusses his recovery and answers participants' questions.

Speakers:
Scott Simpson, MD

Dr. Scott Simpson is Medical Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services and Associate Director of Behavioral Health Services at Denver Health, a vertically integrated academic health system in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Simpson is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. Dr. Simpson has an interest in improving the treatment of behavioral emergencies, particularly by improving the quality and equity of care for patients with suicidal ideation, acute presentations of substance use, and complex or comorbid presentations. Dr. Simpson is nationally renowned for his innovative research and program development. Dr. Simpson has hundreds of publications and presentations and has played a key role in winning more than $11 million in external research and programmatic funding. Dr. Simpson is author of a textbook, The Clinical Interview, to help clinicians apply evidence-based psychotherapy in their brief interactions with patients.

Proud recoveree from methamphetamine use. Had been homeless in New York City during the onset on the pandemic in 2020 and started journey of recovery that same year. Now going on 3 years sans meth & working as a Peer Advocate / Recovery Coach with embarkPCA & Denver Health. Helping patients & clients in their journeys of recovery. In a former life, went to college at La Sorbonne and worked to become an interpreter before shifting gears to an advertising career spanning 15 years which led him across the globe from Paris to London to Berlin before heading back Stateside in 2018. A fulltime foodie, travel enthusiast & passionate music & dance lover.
