Overdose is a global public health challenge—but many overdose deaths are preventable.
This engaging session provides a global perspective on the evolving landscape of drug overdose, examining how changing drug markets, synthetic opioids, polysubstance use and emerging substances are reshaping overdose risks worldwide. The session will explore evidence-based strategies including naloxone, harm reduction, opioid agonist treatment, community-based prevention, early-warning systems and post-overdose care.
Particular emphasis will be placed on India and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), highlighting differences in drug-use patterns, gaps in overdose surveillance, access to naloxone and addiction treatment, and opportunities to strengthen community-based prevention.
Through international examples from the United States, Canada, Scotland and Portugal, the session will examine what has worked, what remains challenging, and what lessons can be adapted to local contexts.
The session will also explore the often-overlooked psychiatric dimension of overdose, including the intersection of substance use, mental illness, trauma and suicidality, and the importance of viewing every non-fatal overdose as an opportunity for treatment and recovery.
