Description
This presentation will review some of the more common mental health problems that can lead to the use of substance use and problems.  We will review the mental health problems that can precipitate the onset of other mental health problems.  There will be some discussion of the cooccurring treatment options in addressing these disorders.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 
  • Describe basic concepts around the origin of comorbid substance use and mental health problems.
  • Outline the more frequent comorbid problems and how to identify them.
  • Describe the basic concepts around treating comorbid problems.

Stephen Wyatt, DO, FAOAAM

Stephen A. Wyatt, D.O, is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with added subspecialty certification in Addiction Psychiatry. He practiced emergency medicine for 12 years prior to entering a psychiatry residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland.  He then was accepted into the NIDA clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. He is currently PSychiatry Faculty at MAHEC in Asheville NC and an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. He is a past president of the AOAAM.  He is the current Chair of the Coalition on Physician Education in Substance Use Disorders a national organization focused on addiction medicine medical school education. He was a Co-Chair for the 2020 focused update of the ASAM Clinical Guidelines for Office Based Opioid Treatment. He is a clinical expert for the SAMHSA funded Provider Clinical Support System, PCSS; Medication Assisted Treatment and Implementation Projects.
