DEA - Addiction Medicine Essentials Course- AOA/AOAAM
Description:
This course provides an in-depth understanding of the neurobiology of addictions and the assessment, diagnosis, and medical management of substance use disorders. Participants will learn about the prevalence and consequences of cannabis, stimulant, opioid, and alcohol use disorders. The course will also cover the management of withdrawal from opioids, alcohol, and benzodiazepines.

Learning Objectives:
Following this course, providers will be better able to:
Give an overview of the neurobiology of addiction and how it affects the neuroplastic changes in brain.
Screen patients with substance use disorders and provide appropriate treatment.
Recognize the prevalence and consequences of cannabis use disorder and its impact on patients' medical and social well-being.
Identify and manage patients with stimulant use disorder, learn about DSM-5 criteria diagnosis.
Understand the value of using medication assisted treatment in helping patients with opioid use problems.
Identify high risk factors in patients who are candidates for naloxone.
Developmental components in managing patients with alcohol use disorder and commonly used medication assisted withdrawal techniques.
Recognize and manage the symptoms of withdrawal for opioids, alcohol and benzodiazepines.

Speakers:
R. Gregory Lande, DO, FAOAAM
R. Gregory Lande DO is a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Lande joined the US Army and completed a twenty-year career in recognition of which he received the Legion of Merit Award. Following his military service, Dr. Lande's active professional career turned to successive state, federal, and private work at all levels including administrative, clinical, academic, and research activities. Dr. Lande specializes in adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and addiction medicine. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Addictive Diseases and a Physician Supervisor of a group of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Lande is a past president of the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine and is a current elected member of the Board of Trustees. In addition to his medical career, Dr. Lande is an independent history scholar. His interest in historical research focuses on the human side of America's Civil War era and his latest book, Spiritualism in the American Civil War, is a continued effort in that direction.
Julie Kmiec, DO, FAOAAM
Julie Kmiec, DO, graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. She completed her general psychiatry residency training and addiction psychiatry fellowship at Western Psychiatric Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. She is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is board certified in general and addiction psychiatry. Dr. Kmiec is the Medical Director of the Ambulatory Detoxification and Bridge Program and the Narcotic Addiction Treatment Program which is a licensed opioid treatment program. Her clinical interests include treatment of drug and alcohol withdrawal, prevention of overdose, and pharmacotherapy for the treatment of addictions. Dr. Kmiec's research involves training healthcare professionals on the implementation of medications for opioid use disorder. She is a past president of the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine.
Anthony Dekker, DO, FAOAAM
Anthony Dekker, DO, FAOAAM is currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Division of Developmental Disabilities for the State of Arizona. He is committed to the Mission of advocating for our members in DDD. Previously he retired after 37 years of federal service, lastly being a member of the Primary Care Service Line at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in the Indian Health Service.
Stephen Wyatt, DO, FAOAAM
Stephen A. Wyatt, D.O, is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with added subspecialty certification in Addiction Psychiatry. He practiced emergency medicine for 12 years prior to entering a psychiatry residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He went on to complete a National Institute of Drug Abuse clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. He is an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. He is currently the addiction psychiatry fellowship director at the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville, North Carolina, the Chairman of the NC Psychiatric Association’s Addiction Psychiatry Committee and the Vice Chair of the Coalition on Physician Education in Substance Use Disorders.
Veronica Ridpath, DO
Veronica Ridpath, DO is a psychiatrist working in the FQHC setting in Florence, SC. She graduated cum laude from University of North Carolina-Charlotte with a Bachelor of Science in psychology with minors in biology and classical studies. She obtained her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was a National Health Service Corp scholar. She has special interest in LGBT mental health and inclusion, improving access to psychiatry services, and primary care integration.
