Crystal methamphetamine: Exposure Effects on Pregnancy, Fetal Development, Delivery, Infancy, and Childhood

Description
After completion of this course, attendees will be aware of sex differences to crystal methamphetamine exposure. Additionally, attendees will learn how antenatal methamphetamine exposure affects those of different developmental ages, from fetus, infant, toddler, child and adolescent.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 
  • Define crystal methamphetamine and define the expected physiological effects on an adult consumer.
  • Give a brief overview of current substance trends with crystal methamphetamine.
  • Describe fetal changes that may occur with maternal methamphetamine use.
  • Outline possible pregnancy and delivery complications that may occur with maternal methamphetamine use.
  • Identify abnormal physiological and behavioral findings that occur in early infancy for those infants born exposed to methamphetamine.
  • Define abnormal behavioral changes that are found in later infancy and early childhood after a prenatal methamphetamine exposure.
  • Connect the correlation of children removed from the home by child protective services to maternal prenatal methamphetamine use and observe possible societal and familial trends

Amy Gallaher Miles, DO 

Dr. Miles attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. After graduating, she completed her family medicine residency at Meadville Medical Center, Meadville, PA. She has professional experience in multiple arenas of medicine: family medicine, directing residential rehabilitation units, lactation care, and wound care. She volunteers her time to see patients at and serve as Medical Director of Meadville Area Free Clinic. She comes to us from UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Safe Harbor, where she serves as addiction medicine physician. Dr. Miles is dually board-certified in family medicine and addiction medicine. She serves as peer reviewer and assistant editor for the Journal of Addictive Diseases and as an author of lay articles focusing on alcohol use disorder. She works to educate both her patients and the upcoming generation of health care professionals as she holds teaching positions for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
