This lecture will provide an overview of the MATTERS program and will highlight selected publications related to access to treatment for opioid use disorders, harm reduction approaches, and telemedicine. 

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • Describe the basic concepts of the MATTERS program.
  • Explain the causes of obstacles patients encounter when seeking treatment for OUD and some mitigation approaches.
  • Describe recent publications on the topics of telemedicine, harm reduction, and linkage to treatment.

Speaker:
Joshua Lynch, DO, FACEP

Dr. Lynch, a Buffalo native completed emergency medicine residency at the University at Buffalo. He is a Professor of Emergency & Addiction Medicine at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He works clinically at a variety of emergency departments across Western New York. Dr. Lynch has nearly 25 years of EMS experience and serves as medical director for Mercy Flight of Western New York, several fire departments, and served as a police physician for a local police department for many years. He is the founder and Chief Medical Officer of the MATTERS (Medication for Addiction Treatment and Electronic Referrals) program focused on prevention, education, increasing access to treatment for substance use disorder, and rapid referrals to long term substance use treatment. He has been an invited speaker to many national and international meetings on the topics of emergency medicine, EMS, and addiction medicine.
