Description

This lecture will discuss the latest in the management of OUD and AUD in the ED and acute care setting. Topics covered will include buprenorphine and methadone initiation in the ED, medications to promote alcohol cessation, and withdrawal management.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

Describe the basic treatment strategies used to initiate MOUD and MAUD in ED patients
Identify patients appropriate for substance use disorder treatment in the ED
Apply the principles of harm reduction to ED patients.

Anthony Spadaro, MD MPH

Anthony Spadaro, MD MPH is a fellow in Medical Toxicology and Addiction Medicine at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System. He previously completed medical school at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Emergency Medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include buprenorphine initiation in the ED, opioid overdose management, and effects of novel adulterants in the drug supply.
