In this course there will be a review of the neurobiology of the benzodiazepines.  Understanding this helps to understand the safety profile and the potential problems when used with other medications.  There will be a presentation on how they can be used safely and for what purposes.  The variability in drug screening for this class of medication will be clarified.  Finally, there will be a review of the principles of benzodiazepine withdrawal.

Overview

In this course we will review the evidence based psychosocial treatments of addiction. There will be a review of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Contingency Management including the associated Community Reinforcement Approach, and Motivational Interviewing. Screening and Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment, SBIRT, and its use of motivational interviewing principles will be reviewed. How some of these therapies can be tied into general medical management will also be considered in the presentation.

Comorbidity of psychiatric and substance use disorders is high in the general population, and even higher in people receiving treatment for either disorder, with rates up to 50%. This presentation reviews the prevalence and consequences of co-occurring disorders (CODs), the reasons underlying increased comorbidity, the overrepresented disorders, and the approaches to treating CODs.
